Project Brief

Fightmaps is the first and only Mixed Martial Arts gym directory, comprising of more than 16,000 gym listings worldwide. The vision for Fightmaps was to unite the rapidly growing MMA community by creating a reliable and intuitive platform where fighters and fans could quickly and easily discover and review gyms and MMA events.

I worked with Fightmaps in the early stages of the startup to define, build and validate a minimum viable product to test with real users.

My Role

Responsible for strategy, user-experience design, guerilla testing, interface design and branding development. Utilized an iterative and lean approach, focused on creating a valuable product by solving real problems identified through testing and user studies.

OBJECTIVE

EXPANDING THE MMA COMMUNITY

MMA fighters, fans and amateur enthusiasts were lacking a central resource for training resources. The main objective for Fightmaps was to provide an online tool that allows people to easily locate, view, and rate gyms near them.

BRANDING

BUILDING A BRAND, FOR THE USER

I designed a strong and recognizable logo to represent the Fightmaps brand that would be cross compatible for various online and mobile mediums and for sponsorship opportunities.

USER EXPERIENCE DESIGN

ITERATING ON A PATH TO SUCCESS

Employing an iterative design process allowed me to work through various ideas and get reliable user feedback to refine the design as needed.

WIREFRAME CONCEPTS

After establishing core user stories, I began iteratively creating hand-rendered wireframes. The initial goal at this stage was not form or precision, but to evaluate concepts quickly and determine what would best solve the needs of target users.

Wireframe Concepts

With user stories and sketched wireframes in hand, I launched into digital wireframe development. This step in the process allowed me to work through various configurations of the MVP, and helped to illustrate ways to improve the value of the service.

USER INTERFACE DESIGN

CRAFTING A KNOCKOUT DESIGN

Using the wireframes and architecture as a foundation, I designed the user interface to support the usability of the key features of the site. The final concept was the result of several rounds of A/B and guerilla testing.

Landing Page

The landing page was designed to clearly and quickly communicate the core services the site offers, and to provide users an intuitive way to sign up.

Gym Locator

The gym locator is the heart of Fightmaps, providing people an easy way to locate MMA gyms near them. Users can search for gyms by location, fighting style, or amenities, and can see other user reviews.

Impact

over 9,100 MMA GYMS LISTED

Early deployment of the MVP allowed us to pivot, refine, and develop features based on qualitative evidence by real users. Following the initial success of Fightmaps, the service continues to evolve as more gyms sign up and user data is analyzed, ensuring we build features that people truly value.

User traffic continues to grow at an average of 33% per month

Average session duration on site has grown to 4:57
